‘Tis the season for New Year’s resolutions, but I’m not a fan. I think resolutions all too often set unrealistic expectations. And when we fail, which inevitably happens, we feel horrible about ourselves. It completely defeats the purpose. So, instead of thinking of it in terms of “resolutions,” I like to encourage my clients to set measurable goals. Anything can be accomplished when broken down into steps.

For instance, perhaps it’s your goal to make 2018 the “Year of You.” This will be the year that you no longer say, “yes,” to every request. This will be the year that you set one day aside a month to get that much-needed massage. This goal is completely doable, not to mention empowering and motivating. Taking it step by step will ensure that you not only achieve this goal, but you are able to maintain it for the foreseeable future.

Step 1: Consider what you would like to change/improve

Step 2: Assess the obstacles in your way- These obstacles can include: people, scheduling/time issues, and self-defeating thoughts

Step 3: Brainstorm ways to deal with each possible obstacle

Step 4: Make a timeline- When would you like to start working toward your goal? Pick a specific date. Write it on your calendar. This will help motivate you.

Step 5: Take one step toward your goal. Keep a record of progress, as this will help keep you motivated.

Having someone in your corner, cheering you every step of the way, can be instrumental in this process. A coach can help you find and sustain motivation, as well as recognize moments of self-sabotage. A coach will also help you assess obstacles and find creative solutions to address each possible roadblock. Consider utilizing a coach to help you meet your goals. You might be surprised by all the things you can accomplish with a little help.
