Fall Feelings
As the summer season ends and we begin our journey into fall and winter, many people experience changes in mood. For some, fall is a comforting time, full of cozy sweaters, warm colors, and cinnamon-scented everything. But for others, fall is a time of quiet contemplation or even painful stillness. Fall signals the beginning of winter. When the natural world around us becomes dormant. The days are shorter and in some areas the weather is downright dreary. It can be quite a departure from the sunny, rejuvenating days of summer. During this time of year I like to remind my clients to check in with themselves. Sometimes we enter a sad or depressed state without even realizing it. We become moody and exhausted without really understanding why.
Here are some signs that you might be experiencing seasonal depression:
- Low energy
- Fatigue
- Overeating
- Social withdrawal
If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is important to identify coping skills to assist you through this time. Physical activity is one of the best ways to fend off feelings of depression. Taking a walk outside, planting a fall garden, or joining a weekly yoga class are all great ways to center yourself as your body and mind transition into fall and winter. Remember to be gentle with yourself. The seasons do not change overnight and neither will you. This is a slow process, one of self-discovery and self-care. Do what feels right for you.
Here are some ideas to help get you started:
- Phone a friend – do you have a friend that struggles during this time of year, too? Perhaps they can become your “Beat the Blues Buddy.” Go for walks, meet for tea, knit some scarves, connect.
- Get outside – connect with the earth by planting fall flowers or going for a hike. Observe the changes around you and send gratitude for the beauty of the changing seasons, knowing that spring will come again.
- Try some new scents – aromatherapy can do wonders for lifting the mood. Try citrus oils such as lemon, orange, and bergamot. These scents not only promote an elevated mood, but they are reminiscent of summer.
